Learn and enjoy American Square and Contra Barn Dancing.

Welcome. My name is Paul Radcliffe and I live close to Blisworth Northants. I run an American Barn Dance Club.

So what do I mean by "Barn Dance" Well I am sure you have probably already gone to a party barn dance at sometime. The caller teaches the different dances and walks you through before you start. They have to be very simple as people don't want to stand around too much. Lots of fun but if you did that every week you would soon become bored. At a barn dance club people are taught more moves (known as calls) so they know what they are doing. The caller has time to teach harder dances and call them faster. This increases the fun and stimulates both mind and body. In America many dancers dance on into their eighties and are still fit and mentally alert.

"Barn Dance" is a generic term for SQUARE DANCING (that's dancing in squares of 8 people with a partner)_CONTRA DANCING ( that's dancing in facing lines with a partner) and some dances where everybody dances in a big CIRCLE with a partner (needs a lot of people). Many of the moves the caller will say are common to all types of barn dance. A common factor is that you will start with a partner but you will change partners as the particular dance progresses. That make barn dancing very sociable and is why it is used for parties. Very quickly everybody will be your friend. there is a lot of laugher and happy faces. By the way the club is in a bright clean well lit hall, not in a barn!

The club is called Grand Union because it is very close to the Grand Union canal which runs through Blisworth The caller lives most of the year on a narrowboat. The header colour on the home page was inspired by the colour of the canal. I wish it could be blue!
